Game Releases This Week (24 Oct - 31 Oct, 2011)

Right ahead of the major titles coming out in November (Uncharted 3, COD Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, etc), a few notable titles will be released this week that should keep gamer occupied for the weekend. The biggest release must be Battlefield 3, which after the hype and awards from game shows, disappointed a little in the single player campaign, but more than make it up with its fantastic multiplayer and gorgeous graphics. There are also a few more casual titles, like Dance Central 2 (although dancing for me is hardcore coordination work) and the kids-friendly Disney Universe. For fan boys out there, Dragon Ball and Pokemon have new games, while Kirby makes a return, together with Daytona USA and House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut to satisfy some nostalgia cravings.

Notable Releases:

Battlefield 3 (PC, PS3, Xbox 306)
Arguably one of the most anticipated title of 2011, Battlefield 3 has been winning acclaims while making its circuit rounds. DICE has once again shown that they can stand out in the midst of the large amount of FPS titles that have been churned out this year. The 5-6 hours single player campaign is probably the best in the series, but familiar storyline (i don't want to use "borrowed" story structure), weak AI and non-destructible environment make it difficult to leave a lasting impression. There are enough variations within the few hours to make sure things do not get dull, but that's about it. The multiplyer is where the game really shines as the worthy successor to the Battlefiled series. 64 player missions, nicely varied and open terrains, fully destructible environment, free access to battle vehicles and balanced incentives make the game easy recommendation to anyone who enjoy exchanging headshots online. The new web-based interface makes match making and game filtering alot easier. And have I mentioned the graphics? The lighting and graphics from Frostbite Engine 2 is truly amazing. This is not a mere luxury for people with hardcore rig, but is accessible even to mid-level set up. Battlefield 3 is a definite buy of the week.

Dance Central 2 (Xbox 360)
The original Dance Central is still one of the best launch title of the Kinect, a natural progression in terms of gameplay to fully utilize full body motion control. The game is not perfect, but is a diamond in the rough with other weak Kinect titles so far. Dance Central 2 managed to step up its game and offers a even better overall experience. Detection has been improved, although some gestures are still not picked up as readily. Voice control has been added for easy access of the menus. Overall, Dance Central 2 is one of the best Kinect games out there today.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Wii)
After the success of Kirby's Epic Yarn, Nintendo's iconic pink puff ball makes a return with Kirby's Return to Dream Land. The game marks a return to the series roots, with more traditional gameplay without the fanciful art style. However, the games seems to be geared towards the younger audience with easy levels and control that is easy to pick up. 4 onscreen players can play the game together, which makes it a game for families to enjoy quality time together with younger members of the household.
